25/07/2024. Predicting sepsis using microbiome data: This is the goal of the MicrobiomSepsisPred Junior Research Group (JRG). The three-member research team is based at the Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM) at the Essen University Hospital and is part of the SMITH Consortium.

What are the specific research interests of your junior research group?

Dr. Ivana Kraiselburd, JRG leader: "We want to investigate the value of using microbiome data in combination with machine learning methods for the early prediction of sepsis. We are developing new methods that complement and extend the predictive horizon of models based on physiological parameters. This can help to speed up responses and improve the prognosis of patients in intensive care units."

What specific research interest motivated you to become part of a junior research group?

Ann-Kathrin Dörr: "The opportunity to work at the interface between microbiome research and machine learning, as well as the close collaboration with researchers from different disciplines was a strong motivation to become part of this group."

How would you describe your research in medical informatics to someone not familiar with the field?

Josefa Welling: "We study the genetic material of bacteria in the blood of patients suffering from sepsis (colloquially known as blood poisoning). We use this data to detect sepsis earlier and treat it with effective drugs (antibiotics)."
