Experiences with standards and terminologies exchanged within the scope of Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) event

29 May 2017. The MII workshop on semantic interoperability took place on 22 May 2017 in Berlin. The aim was to provide information and enable the exchange of insights into the standards and terminologies that will be discussed and/or deployed during the initiative.

Attendees included representatives from all seven MII consortia and the project management agency DLR. During the all-day event, experts from across the globe reported on three main topics: SNOMED CT, the standardisation of drug documentation, and bioinformatics standards. The workshop’s focus was determined by the MII interoperability working group, which addresses cross-consortia interoperability issues. All three topics are particularly important for further development in the health system, healthcare and medical research in Germany. Specifically, the initiative aims to improve the exchange and integration of data – and, therefore, their downstream usability in other areas. The prerequisite is semantic interoperability and, consequently, the use of internationally recognised terminologies and standards.
