Berlin, 28/01/2022. For a preventive, crisis-proof and modern health system in Germany, the Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has brought about important innovations in recent years. With the funding guideline for the extension of the MII now published, a new phase of data-based health research in Germany is starting.

Background:
The funding programme of the Medical Informatics Initiative has a modular structure. In the development and networking phase (2018-2022), the BMBF is funding the establishment of data integration centres at university hospitals with over 200 million euros. Using concrete use cases, the consortia will demonstrate the practical value of their IT solutions.
The focus of the upcoming consolidation and extension phase (2023-2026) is on expanded cooperation between the university hospitals and on cooperation with new partners.
In addition, the BMBF is funding six "Digital Hubs: Advances in Research and Health Care” with around 50 million euros (2021-2025) as part of the MII. Their task is to allow the pioneering work of the consortia - initially in pilot projects - to be incorporated into other areas of the health system: from outpatient care in general practitioners' practices to care in rehabilitation and nursing facilities.
To strengthen research and education in the field of digital health, the BMBF is also supporting newly established professorships with a total of 21 junior research groups and is providing around 30 million euros for this purpose (2020-2026).
