Save the date: The Medical Informatics Initiative (MII) cordially invites project participants and interested parties to the Symposium of the MII 2022: "Strengthening research and advancing healthcare - Results and Perspectives" from 5th to 6th of October 2022 at dbb forum, Friedrichstraße 169 in 10117 Berlin, Germany.
Within the scope of the Medical Informatics Initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), medical and IT professionals collaborate with researchers and scientists across multiple disciplines in German university hospitals. Their shared goal is to digitally capture hospital healthcare data, making these available for research – to provide faster and better medical treatments. At the same time, therapies can be improved for individual patients. The BMBF provides around 300 million euros with the aim of strengthening medical research and improving patient care. The coordination office is jointly managed by TMF (Technology, Methods and Infrastructure for Networked Medical Research), MFT (German Association of Medical Faculties), and VUD (German Association of Academic Medical Centers).
At the MII symposium, the results achieved by the initiative in the current funding phase (2018-2022) will be presented and discussed. In addition, an outlook on upcoming challenges in the upcoming phase (2023-2026) will be given.

"The MII is to become the centrepiece of data-based health research in Germany", says Bettina Stark-Watzinger, Federal Minister of Education and Research.
Data integration centres have been established at university hospitals nationwide within the framework of the MII. The decentralised federated research data infrastructure is intended to provide science with a broad spectrum of medical data in compliance with data protection regulations. The research results are to be fed back into the health care system so that patients can benefit directly from the findings.
From 2023 onwards, the focus will be on a networking with further initiatives and actors in order to achieve digitalisation in health research across the board. At present, a start is already being made with the "Digital Hubs", which are extending the efforts of University Medicine to outpatient and regional health care via pilot projects.
