ADMIRE: medical informatics agenda for healthcare, research and education – a consortium of five university hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia.

During the conceptual phase 2016/2017 the ADMIRE consortium was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). The university hospitals of Münster, Bonn, Cologne, and Essen, plus Düsseldorf as a network partner, joined forces to improve research and patient care through innovative IT solutions.

The participating hospitals and sites intend to continue participation in the medical informatics initiative. To this end, BMBF is to provide additional funding for the development and networking phase.

The sites that planned the development of a data integration centre during the conceptual phase can join one of the four fully funded consortia for the development and networking phase (DIFUTURE, HiGHmed, MIRACUM, SMITH). The aim is for these additional sites to establish data integration centres in line with the consortium they are joining, and to take part in at least one of their use cases.

Conceptual phase

A concept for shared data use and the organisational structure of the data integration centres were developed and agreed upon. Initial versions of data maps for corresponding hospitals were created, and use cases defined:

  • Creation of a platform for scientific studies on the basis of data from patient care. This platform will support planning, recruitment, data management, and the analysis of interventional and observational studies across multiple locations. The hospital information system will be further developed according to a transferrable concept, to enable data exchange with research databases.
  • Personalised medicine: standardised clinical data are to be combined with large volumes of data generated by new diagnostic methods – to support clinical decision-making and address new questions in research. These innovative functions are to be integrated into the healthcare IT system, for example to improve various drug therapies.
